Whats a good site on how to train a dog?

I just got a 7 month old boxer puppy and she’s great. I would like to get as much info as I can. She’s already house broken but I’d like to get some good tips on crate training, tips on games like fetch and other how to’s in the dog world.

Here’s a link to a good site that tells you how to train your dog for basic obedience, such as sit, stay, down, heel, etc

The second link is has instructions for tricks once your dog is able to follow the basic obedience commands..

Good luck and have fun :-)

How To Make Puppy Invitations

how to make puppy invitations
how do I make him realize that I’m worth more…?

I just received an invite to for a Valentines dinner and I don’t know how to reply. I’ve known this guy for about 4 months now and its been hot and cold all the time. He’d make dates and then cancel 5 minutes before saying that he’s got a headache… I haven’t heard anything from him in 2 weeks… I basically wrote him off. Fact is that I really like him and might have given him the impression that I’ll be waiting to answer his call when ever he decides to contact me (or doesn’t) I really want to have dinner with him, but I want I’m to realize that this is not on! And that I’m not going sit around like a love sick puppy and wait for him to make up his mind. Do I accept the invitation? I haven’t replied yet. What should I say? please help….

If he’s made dates with you only to cancel then past behavior is a good predictor of future behavior. Unless you know whether or not these headaches are migraines (stress related) that he just can’t help, I’d not accept the invitation. Are you sure he’s not playing you for a fool? Of course if you’re ok with the possibility of getting stood up on Valentine’s Day then go for it.

How to find puppy Laws in WA State/or “Unfit for Sale” Laws?

I am looking for information on how to find out what the puppy lemon laws are in WA State and or laws stateing information on what “Unfit for Sale” laws are for breeders.
P.s. I have used google and other resources and cannot seem to find what I am looking for. This was the last place for me to try. Other wise I have no idea where to begin correctly.
Thanks… hope this will help guide me in the right direction.

This site has consolidated the WA state laws pertaining to dogs: http://www.animallaw.info/statutes/stuswast16_10_010_070.htm

You should also check the laws for the appropriate county and/or city.

Lab Puppy Training Schedule

June 29th, 2011 admin No comments

What is a good schedule for a 6 month old beagle/lab mix?

I just rescued a 6 month old beagle/lab mix and am trying to establish a schedule of feeding/potty time/free time/walk, but am kine of loss at to which to do when and how often. I am currently crate training the puppy so that he can become potty trained. Does anyone have any suggestions on what a good schedule would be for y new puppy?

I would take him out of the crate to go potty first thing in the morning, feed him, take him out for a potty break again, some free time throughout the day and occasionally take him out to go potty. Take him for a walk and then feed him and take him out for another potty break before putting him in his crate for the night.

Hobbies and sports for dogs

1. Walking

All dogs have to be walked daily so why not make this part of your exercise routine? You can plan a route that could take an hour and try and include as many hills as possible. If your are planning this in the winter months you will have to make sure that you and your dog can be seen which means a hi-vis vest for you or a hi-vis dog coat for your dog. You can also buy hi-vis dog collars and dog leads which will make your dog see from any passer by. You can get these pet supplies from any online pet supplier such as Swell pets, Swell pets.co.uk

2. running

If you want to get fit quick but can’t afford the gym why not going running with your dog? This will again keep you and your dog fit and healthy and give you quality bonding time together.

3. Obedience training

People think of obedience training as very formal and dare we say boring.  This is far from the case. Basic obedience training will help you to teach the dog to sit, stand, down and of course the main one, come back when called when the dog’s off its lead. Joining a dog club to do obedience will keep your dog focused, keen on you, keen to learn and mix with other dogs there to keep you dog happy and balanced.

4.  Agility training

As with any other discipline, agility will give you good quality time with your dog and is great for exercise for both of you. Doing agility is great fun. There are many obstacles to learn such as the A-frame, dog walk and tunnels. This will take a lot to train but well worth it in the end. One thing to remember when training sports such as agility is your dog will need to be fed before training to give them the energy but not to be fed just before training. It is recommended that you feed the dog food at least two hours before exercise.

5. Flyball

Flyball again is another sport you can do with your dog. Whereas with agility you compete on your own, Flyball is a team sport and it is great fun. There are many great training clubs around the country that can offer these events.  Why not have a look and join up today.

Stay Down Puppy Housebreaking Pads

June 28th, 2011 admin No comments

What can I do to stop my puppy from chewing stuff when we’re away from home?

My family and I have had a 3 month old female German Shepherd puppy for at least a month now.

Since we all need to go to work and school, we leave the puppy in the garage, setting a separate space for her crate and toys and laid out some newspapers for her to pee and poo. Although things have been going well with her, today we came home to find the padding on the heater chewed out.

We’ve housebroken her, taught her basic commands (sit, stay, come, down, leave it), got her toys she can chew on and spend time playing with her every day. However, it’s hard to stop her destructive behavior.

What can we do to keep her from chewing on things that are not her toys?
To some of the answers posted that suggested we lock the puppy in the crate while we’re away– we can’t do that since we leave for 8 hours and doing so would be cruel.

She’s a puppy, so she’s teething. Crate her when you aren’t home. If you see her chewing on something she’s not supposed to, redirect her to a chew toy. Use bitter Apple spray on things you don’t want her to chew, but remember that you may need to reapply it, as it may wear off.

Please don’t spank your puppy as some people have suggested. She’s a puppy and doesn’t know better. hitting her isn’t going to take away her urge to chew on things, nor is it going to soothe her gums. It’s just going to teach her that a hand coming towards her means pain is coming.

Puppy Losing Teeth Not Eating

June 28th, 2011 admin No comments

puppy losing teeth not eating
Our 12 month old puppy lost a canine tooth (noticed 08/02/08). Adult/baby tooth? What can we/he expect? Thanx!

he is a 12 month old shepherd/boxer mix. he lost his lower right canine tooth. his newly exposed gum seemed a bit sensitive to him at first, and he wasn’t eating nearly as much nearly as often. now hes eating a bit more food a bit more frequently- with the sensitivity declining, but still not his norm. we noticed the tooth missing on 08/02/08, “ruff”ly one week ago. he likes to chew on bones/toys/things. a vet check is coming in a week, just to be safe. thank you for your comments, they are much appreciated!

dogs normally get their adult teeth in by 6-7 months of age. If your dog is 12 months, it’s probably an adult tooth. Have the vet check it out. What you can do is to feed your dog soft canned foods to help his gums heal.

Hope he’s ok.
