are we nutty if we get a puppy when we have a toddler?

My family looked at lab puppies over the weekend. We’ve got 3 kids- a 7 yr old, a 5 yr old, and a 15 month old. We love dogs, even the 15 month old loves dogs, and these puppies, of course, were very cute. Also, we found 2 that were calm and non-chewy, even at 9 weeks. That is, they played but didn’t try to knock down the baby. When they tried chewing on our hands and we pushed them gently away, they simply stopped, whereas the others just tried to chew shoelaces. I don’t know how unusual it is to find Lab pups that can be that calm so quickly, the others I’ve seen were all high, high energy. Anyway, we are thinking of adding these two puppies to our family, but I wonder if we are nutty! We would crate train them, my husband gets up at 5 to go to work and he’d walk them first thing; I stay home; we have a fenced yard and a large home; we’d take them to dog beach and park; they’d be indoor family pets. My toddler is an easy kid. We can do the work, will it be too much work?

As long as you are attentive and thoughful how to train and educate them both, together, it can be a benefit. If you already find it hard to have the time for either, then a puppy will be a burden, it being a time consuming responsibility that can’t be taken with you when out or traveling in all cases, and hence restricts your possible involvement with other people.

It’s your choice, to know how you want to spend your time, and then be responsible to that choice.

Boy Colored Bedding for a baby Girl?

I have this really cute blue puppy dog crib bedding set that I cannot seem to sell. Instead of buying something new for my baby girl that is due in May, I was thinking of using this puppy bedding. It is really cute, it is just blue. Do you think this is wrong?

My 2 year old daughter had girl bedding in her room.

Since I don’t follow the traditionalist pink is for girls blue is for boys stereotype, I think it’s perfectly fine. I’d even be happy to dress my boy in pink and my girl in blue. Colors are just colors.

Puppy Chow Dog Food Reviews

I want to switch my dog food but I can not decide which is best of the 3. Any experience, suggestions, advice?

We have a 7 month old, 41 pound mutt. We have always fed him Purina puppy Chow. He has had really dry and flaky skin as well as rashes lately. So, I have been doing research and in the process have learned how horrible all these major store brands are. So, I have been doing research and reading reviews for better food. I have narrowed it down to Canidae All Life Stages, Solid Gold Hundchen Floken Puppy Food, and natural Balance. Any experience or knowledge or suggestions would be so helpful. Thank You!

out of those three I would go with Solid gold! That is what brand all my animals! If you feed solid gold after he get past a year old I would change him to the barking at the moon grain free food!

One other food that is good is Taste of the Wild if you can find that go for it! I have been reading amazing things about that food! I cant feed it because there is chicken in it and one of my dog has an allergy =(

Congrats on feed a quality food!!!! one more note on feeding top quality food you don’t need to feed as much! my dogs are 95lbs and I only have to feed 2 cups of food a day! so start off with the smallest amount and if he get the runs cut back 1/4 cup.

Puppy Starter Kit With Crate

November 27th, 2011 admin No comments

What kinds of stuff should be included in a puppy “starter kit”? (see details)?

My fiance and I really want to adopt a dog, but we’re not sure if we can afford all the intial costs. So I thought I’d sit down and come up with a “puppy starter kit” which is basically all the costs we need to consider. Here’s what I have so far -

1) Adoption fee

2) Groomer appt.

3) Crate

4) Chew toys

5) Leash

6) dog food

7) baby gate? (too keep him confined to certain areas?)

8) Vet Check Up?

Are there any other hidden costs? How much does it cost to go to the Vet? Will he even need a vet appointment if he’s coming from the shelter?

Yes, a vet check-up is important, but costs vary greatly from vet to vet and even in different areas of the country so can’t help you there. I don’t really know why you need a groomer appointment unless you’re getting something like a poodle that needs clipping. If you’re getting a dog that just needs bathing and brushing, it’s much cheaper (and a bonding experience for both dog and owner) to do it at home. In that case, you’d need nail clippers and appropriate brushes for whatever kind of dog you’re getting.

If you’re first-time dog owners, I’d also consider getting a really good book on dog care. It might seem like a high initial expense, but a lot of these items are a one-time expense, and if you can’t afford them, you have to consider that you can’t afford a dog – dogs are an expense. There’s going to be vet bills for the duration of a dog’s life, perhaps unexpected ones.

Puppy Training Drops

puppy training drops
what would you pay for this type of puppy service?

what would you consider a reasonable rate for a puppy training daycare?
It would include pick up and drop off of your puppy ,(from between 730-930am to 430-630pm) house breaking, lead training, proper socialization, manners, basic obedience and crate training?

Well… I consider housetraining, lead training, socialization, manners, basic training and crate training a part of owning a puppy.. I think it helps to build a bond with your puppy while you are teaching and praising them.. Learning together, teaching them new things, the excitement when they finally ‘ get it ‘ I would say that I would prefer to do it myself.. Even tho it’s not always the most fun, housetraining a puppy.. I think they are all bond building activities.. And I don’t like the idea of my young puppy being exposed to other dogs before they have had their vaccinations.. If you are saying that you wouldn’t start taking in puppies til they are finished their shots.. Well I have them already housetrained by 16 weeks, so I wouldn’t even need to bother… By 16 weeks I have them housetrained, crate trained, lead trained, working on manners and they know sit, off, down, come etc.. I guess I would have to decline the offer.. Thanks anyhow.
