Any suggestions for night time sleep & house training a 7 wk old puppy?
He does really well during the day when I can watch him and let him out. At night, after I take his food bowl and take him out, he whines when I try to leave him in the bathroom. If left loose in the house, he “goes” several times during the night. I really don’t want to use the puppy pads if I can find another way. He stays in the bathroom when I can’t be home. He whines when I leave him during the day like that too. Any ideas?
He’s very young and adjusting to his new surroundings and routine. He’s been recently separated from his mother and Littermates, everything he’s known in his short life. It could take him a week or two to adjust, but once he does, the crying will stop – It’s something that every new puppy goes through.
Your best option is to crate train him. Once he gets used to the crate, he’ll think of it as his Den and a safe haven. If he’s unattended, you’re not home, or at night, he goes in the crate. The crate should only be big enough for him to stand, turn around and lay down in a stretched position – Any bigger and he’ll use one area for sleeping and one for potty (Which will quickly become one when he moves around!). Get a wire crate that will accommodate his full grown size and use the divider panel that comes with it to change the size as he grows.
Take him outside as soon as he wakes up, 5-10 minutes after eating or drinking anything and every 2-3 hours when he’s awake.
At 7 weeks, he’s going to need to go outside at least twice during the night, even if he’s crated. The rule of thumb to use for how long a pup can hold it is # of months +1, so at barely 2 months, that’s about 3 hours.
Good luck – Just remember, have patience and be consistent…he’s still a baby and this could take a little bit of time!

my brother made puppy more aggressive. what do i do?
i’m getting really pissed off. i made my puppy all nice and cuddly and because of him (he play fights with my puppy and says bad girl like, 20 times). i’m so pissed off. i really am. i worked my butt off to fix my puppy’s behavior. i told my brother to stop but he doesn’t. i told my parents and they don’t care.
If it’s just play fighting I don’t see any need for concern. As long as he’s not actually hurting the dog… puppies play, it’s what they do. They like it, and it’s good for them, both physically (exercise and all) and mentally (stimulation, bonding, relating, etc…). puppies are supposed to be energetic – they need the exercise and have tons of energy to burn.
I’d have him lay off the “bad girl”, though, as that can send mixed signals.
Anyway… a nice and cuddly dog is fine. A nice and cuddly PUPPY is odd and not terribly healthy.
